Is This Street Photography?

The Sony World Photography Awards is a Huge & Prestigious Photography Awards. Anyone who enters the awards would love to win it & add it to their list of achievements. The Awards are Supposed to Carry a lot of weight ( I Think ! ) Who wouldn’t want to win it.

In 2025 The Awards Included a “Street Photography” Category.

AND….DRum Roll….The 2025 “Street Photography” Open Category winner is Khairizal Maris from Indonesia.

Of Course, I am delighted for ANY Photographer who wins ANY Category that they enter! It’s very Rewarding & the recognition is Fantastic. GOOD LUCK to Him.

The Photograph is I belive “Shot On The Street” ( I assume it’s on the street as They are Football Fans celebrating a win, Again Assuming that they are watching it on a Big Screen somewhere ) Is a very nice , Atmospheric, Adequately detailed, Happy Photograph.

The question is : Is This Street Photography? Just Because it was shot on the Street?  or Open Air!!??

Is There No longer ANY difference between, Reportage, Photo-Journalism, Social Documentary, Event Photography or Sports Photography? Can ANYTHING Shot on teh Street Be Named Street Photography?

Is Paparazzi Street Photography then!??

I dodnt really like the use of the term “Decisive Moment” BUT for the sake of this discussion, as I understand it, “THE” Decisive “MOMENT” is a Fraction of TIME only during which, The CAPTURE, is Capturable! Iside THAT Fraction! But it Looks to me that there were MANY Moments during this shot! You could have taken 30 Frames almost all of them the same & the person next to me, could have taken exactly the same! So, is This Street Photography? or a FANTASTIC Sports Event Photo Journalism!??

Either The Photography Judges & Curators are Un-Educated OR I’m Loosing The Plot!!!!

In Any Event Congradulations toKhairizal Maris. Well Done & my Best Wishes.

AMERICAN STREET PHOTOGRAPHY IN PARIS

We recently had a trip to Paris, decided to have a long 4 day weekend away & Paris was a good choice. Not too long a flight & not peak tourist season yet. My Last trip to Paris was more than 17 years ago. Paris has changed a lot. Buldings are still teh same & mostly as grand as they come. During our first walk aroudn the city, meandering, fortuitously we came across La Galerie Rouge. What a delight to see that the exhibition at the time was “American Street Photography” and not just to look around but also Prints for sale. In the front Gallery window was a gallery card with a photo by The Americal Photographer Jill Freedman who was close to our hearts. The “Street Photography” of six American Photographers was on Dispaly, Louis Faurer, Jill Freedman , Dave Heath, Danny Lyon, Joseph Sterling and Garry Winogrand. It was also delightful to see that the Gallery was busy & many people were viewing & chatting about Street Photography. It’s hopefull that Street Photography as a Genre is gathering interest as many Street Photographs of the 1950’s to Mid 1970’s are amongst some of most valuable & iconic Photographs of the genre. It’s also an encouragement to those young & up and coming folks interested in Street Photography.

And as Luck would have it, I took a shot of a Street Photographer right outside…. We didnt talk much

All About Photo is pleased to present ‘Life is But a Dream’ by Eric Davidove

All About Photo proudly presents an exclusive online exhibition featuring the Street Photography of the American photographer Eric Davidove. On view throughout August 2024, this captivating showcase includes twenty street photographs from his acclaimed series ‘Life is But a Dream’

Life is But a Dream

My photo project is a collection of candid moments in California urban settings. The moments are fleeting, inconsequential, and appear to be hardly real. They would have been gone instantly, like a dream that vanishes soon after waking, had it not been for me and my camera.

My many years as a street mime have strongly influenced my photographic voice. I learned how to anticipate and respond to human behavior to make people laugh. So it’s no surprise that many of my street photos are decisive and quirky.

As a street photographer, I hunt for candid moments without preconceived notions or project plans. Instincts and subconsciousness are my guide. My photos were varied when I started as a street photographer. Over time, my photographic voice has become more defined, consistent, distinct, and recognizable.

The meditative process of street photography and being present have been, and continue to be, the most attractive things for me. I try not to worry about how people will judge my work or how many good photos I get at the end of a shooting day. There are several shooting days when I don’t even get a good photo. That’s fine with me as long as I learned, had fun, and exercised.

I want my photos to inspire people to pay more attention when they’re out and about. To be present without wanting to be somewhere else, without being in their head or lost in thought. That’s when life is more real.

I am a junkie, and my drug is street photography. Since 2014, I have been walking thousands of miles in urban centers, documenting how I see the world. The many years working as a street mime have strongly influenced his photographic voice. I am trained to anticipate and respond to human behavior to make people laugh. So it’s no surprise that many of my street photos are quirky, funny, and satirical.

Why make photos like this? I see many people walking around urban centers without paying too much attention to what’s happening around them. Most people stare at their phones, make phone calls, or listen to music. They’re not present or living in the moment. I hope my photos are a wake-up call. I want people to look at my photos and think, “Maybe I should spend less time on my phone and more time observing life around me.”

Look at the award winners and finalists of well-known and respected national and international street photography competitions, and you will likely see some of my photos. Moreover, my photos have been widely published in magazines and books. More details are available in the Awards, Publications, and Group Shows sections.

What’s next for me? I hope to publish a book (or zine), develop photo projects, participate in more gallery exhibitions, and secure more commercial work where street photography is the desired style. I recently joined the Candid City Street Photography Collective, whose members are all based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Fotografiska New York mounts exhibit surveying three decades of Bruce Gilden’s work

Today, Fotografiska New York invites the public to WHY THESE? an exhibition of Bruce Gilden’s favorite work from 1979. The show will run until September 2024, after which it will head to Fotografiska locations in Tallinn, Estonia and Stockholm, Sweden for the rest of the year and early 2025.

Envisioned as a tour of the American street photographer’s fruitful career, the exhibit showcases 45 photos handpicked by Gilden himself. Among these are 20 iconic snaps from his major projects in New York, Coney Island, Haiti, and Tokyo.

A number of features make Why These? a must-visit for both street photography enthusiasts and long-time fans of Gilden’s work. Visitors will be treated to 25 large-scale prints of his work in full color, a nod to his 2013 shift to digital color. The exhibit also features some of Gilden’s latest portrait work, including those from last year. Many of these are also showcased for the first time.

“Bruce’s work is raw, candid, entertaining and insightful – a true documentarian of the human condition,” said Jessica Jarl, Global Exhibitions Director at Fotografiska. “As a native New Yorker, it is only fitting to have his global tour begin right here. Hand-picked by Bruce himself, Why These? gives us an inside look at his creativity, process and inspirations as one of the most brilliant street photographers of our time.”

Brooklyn-born and lifelong New Yorker Gilden began his photography adventure with a Miranda camera, which he bought for himself in 1968 and taught himself how to use over the next year. What started out as observing the city’s “tough guys” from his home’s second floor window eventually evolved into telling his own visual story of Brooklyn and its interesting inhabitants.

As an iconic street photographer whose works are easily recognizable, Gilden’s signature confrontational style and use of flash has enabled him to portray his subjects as “characters” against the backdrop of gritty urban life. In the process, he shines a light on humanity’s flaws, oddities, and imperfections instead of shying away from them.

“This is me, Bruce Gilden,” he noted on the exhibit. “I want to show the viewers where I started and where I am now. Take it or leave it!”

Fotografiska will present special programs for visitors and members, including a walking tour of Coney Island (where Bruce Gilden started his first project in 1969), a photo portrait studio event with the photographer, additional artist talks, and other activities. These are all part of the museum’s summer-long celebration of street photography through events and other ongoing exhibitions.

Visit the Fotografiska New York website for more information on Why These? and their other ongoing and upcoming exhibitions.

Simply Scintillating: A Retrospective.

Five Decades of Photographs by Meryl Meisler.

September 14—November 4, 2023

CLAMP is proud to present “Meryl Meisler | Simply Scintillating: A Retrospective”—the artist’s second solo exhibition with CLAMP and the first retrospective of the artist’s five-decade career as a photographer, which began in 1973.

The work in “Simply Scintillating” spans from Meisler’s early pictures of suburban Long Island to the frenetic clubs of 1970s Manhattan, to slices of daily life in pre- gentrification Bushwick, to the present, where Meryl has found herself back in the nightlife world documenting the contemporary party landscape through a lens informed by decades spent watching New York and its inhabitants evolve.

Regardless of whether her subject is a stranger on the Bowery, Grace Jones at a club opening, or a child in Bushwick putting on roller skates, Meisler maintains a perspective and voice as a photographer who does not shy away from the absurd and joyful. As the artist puts it, she has a “queer, quirky eye.”

Mixing pictures from different eras and contexts is not a new strategy for Meisler, who once had an epiphany below a disco ball in a dance club in Bushwick. In thatmoment, she realized that her pictures of glamorous nightclubs and humble streetcorners in Bushwick made sense together—telling a wider and more complex story of the city. The clubs are no longer just downtown; they are now out in the neighborhood where Meisler used to teach.

A public school teacher for 31 years, Meisler only revealed her vast photographic archive upon retiring in 2010. Then the work emerged like a bat out of hell! This exhibition offers a peek into the archive, including vintage and contemporary prints surveying the artist’s entire collection of images.

Meryl Meisler was born 1951 in the South Bronx and raised in North, Long Island, New York. Inspired by photographers such as Diane Arbus and Jacques Henri Lartigue, as well as her dad, Jack, and grandfather, Murray Meisler, Meryl Meisler began photographing herself, family, and friends while enrolled in a photography class taught by Cavalliere Ketchum at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. In 1975, Meisler returned to New York City and studied with Lisette Model, continuing to photograph her hometown and the city around her. After working as a freelance illustrator by day, Meisler frequented and photographed the infamous New York discos. As a 1978 C.E.T.A. Artist grant recipient, Meisler created a portfolio of photographs which explored her Jewish identity for the American Jewish Congress. After C.E.T.A., Meisler began a three- decade career as a NYC public school art teacher.

Upon retiring from the New York City public schools, Meisler began releasing large bodies of previously unseen work. Her first monograph, A Tale of Two Cities: Disco Era Bushwick (Bizarre, 2014), received international acclaim. The book juxtaposes her zenith of disco photos with images of the burned out yet beautiful neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn in the 1980s. Her second book, Purgatory & Paradise: Sassy ‘70s, Suburbia & The City (Bizarre, 2015), contrasts intimate images of home life on Long Island alongside New York City street and night life. Her most recent monograph is titled New York PARADISE LOST Bushwick Era Disco (Parallel Pictures Press, 2021).

Meryl Meisler lives and works in New York City and Woodstock, New York.
